Cocci

Cocci may be gram positive or gram negative bacteria. It is spherical or rounded structure.

Classification: Two types-

     1.Gram positive                                             2.Gram negative

Gram positive two types:                        Gram negative two types:
1.Cluster forming                                                1.Aerodic
2.Chain or pair forming                                       2.Anaerobic

General character:

  1.Shape:Rounded or spherical
  2.Size:Usually I µm in diameter.
3.Arrange:Cluster form (staphylococci).or in pair (pneumococci)or short chain (streptococci)
4.Capsule:Some strain are capsulated and some are non-capsulated.
  5.Flagella:Non-flagellated.
  6.Spore:Non –sporing.
  7.Motility:Non –motile.
8.Growth:Grow on ordinary media but some require special media.
9.Pathogenecity:Most of them pathogenic, some are non pathogenic

10.Types :Most of the cocci are aerobic but some are anaerobic.
